PALI TIPITAKA CHANTING : ORAL TRADITION OF THERAVADA BUDDHISM

The vision and inspiration of the Pali Tipitaka International Council was born on the historic and sacred occasion of the 2550th Buddha Jayanthi Celebration held in Bodhgaya in February 2006. The Maha Bodhi Society of India had organized a yearlong celebration throughout its Centers in India and Nepal. The Buddhagaya Center of the Society as a part of its celebrations had organized the month-long Pali Tipitaka Chanting Ceremony fist from February 12 to March 4, 2006 under the sacred Bodhi Tree at the Maha Bodhi Maha Vihara to commemorate this great occasion and had invited representatives of the Maha Sangha from Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India. The Light of Buddhadharma Foundation International, USA were the main sponsors of this chanting ceremony. On February 18th after the day’s chanting, at a meeting held under the Sacred Bodhi Tree, it was unanimously resolved by the participating Maha Sangha to make this chanting an annual event, to be held on the first full moon after the completion of the Nyingma Monlam Chenmo or “World Peace Ceremony” at Buddhagaya.
